Barrine

World Heritage listed Lake Barrine is an extinct volcanic crater, that is located 700 m above sea level on the Cairns Highlands, about 1 ¼ hour drive from Cairns. The lake has filled with water and is surrounded by complex rainforest. The bio-diversity is extremely high.

Dove

A 6 km (3.8 miles) long, graded walking trail takes us around the lake.

After a short while we come across the first highlight. The Twin Sister Kauris are two majestic 55 m tall Queensland Kauri Pines which are estimated to be more than 1100 years old.

The lake is known for its diverse wildlife. We spot kangaroos, colourful birds and reptiles, including the occasional 5 m long Amethystine Python.

Trail

Half way into our journey, our guests have the opportunity to swim in the lake. Back on the track we now pass a section with many giant strangler figs.

Photo

Our guests learn about the complex ecology of the environment. Many interesting plants are pointed out like famous former cabinet timbers as Red Cedar, Black Bean, Silky Oak and others.

A light lunch is served at the picturesque Lake Barrine Teahouse which has been entirely built of timber and is standing at the edge of the lake since 1924.
