Bartle

This is Australia's best rainforest walk and the absolute highlight of any holiday for the super-fit.

Mt. Bartle Frere is Queensland's Highest Peak 1622m (5322 feet) and is covered with World Heritage rainforest. The track follows the battle grounds of the 1997 Eco-Challenge Adventure Race.

Bartle

Ascent is from Ghurkha Road on the Cairns Highlands, descent to Josephine Falls on the coastal side.

Our day begins before sunrise. We set out from the Cairns Highlands side in the west.

As we hike upwards we pass through spectacular sections of rainforest. These vary immensely with the change of altitude. The forests are undisturbed and contain refuge areas where our naturalist guide explains some of the most ancient fauna and flora on our planet.

Toad

Breathtaking views can be gained at several rocky outcrops approaching the summit providing excellent photographic opportunities.

Coastal

Close to the peak a magical moss-covered creek enables us to refill our water-bottles with pure and fresh mountain water.

A short time later we reach the ultimate high — standing on the 1622m (5322 feet) peak of Queensland's highest mountain. On a clear day we enjoy superb views over the Great Barrier Reef and surrounding country.

Steep

A break for a delicious picnic lunch replenishes our energy. Descending over the eastern side towards the coast, we come to the most challenging part of the trek — a wild looking area with masses of enormous granite boulders covered with orchids and Rhododendron.

Majuba

Then we are back on the narrow and steep trail through the dense tropical rainforest. Majuba Falls await us, further down the mountain. Here we can revitalise ourselves with a dip into cold mountain water before the final stretch of this incredible journey.
